Starting Percussion Can Feel Overwhelming

Many students enjoy music, but feel unsure when they first start percussion or band.

Between reading rhythms, technique, and keeping up in class, it’s easy for beginners to feel behind.

After more than 20 years of teaching percussion, I’ve seen how confidence and individualized guidance can make a huge difference in a student’s musical journey. The Percussion Mission was created to help beginner percussion students build strong fundamentals, gain confidence, and enjoy making music.

My Approach

  • Build confidence first

  • Teach clear fundamentals step-by-step.

  • Help students feel successful early.

  • Support what they’re already learning in band.

"Mr. Payne first and foremost is genuinely kind, thoughtful, and well tempered during all cases of teaching in a classroom setting as well as in private lessons. He's very willing to teach, but also willing to push others in a positive direction with as much or as little feedback as necessary. Of any of my pre college instructors, he is one of the few who was genuinely able to teach me something new and progress as a drummer. He made me a better set drummer, marching drummer, and inspired me to continue doing college marching band."

Testimonials

“Mr. Phil Payne was my drumline instructor at Edison High School from 2015-2018. With his support, the music department bought a marimba my senior year and I was one of Phil’s first 4-mallet marimba students. Phil deepened my passion for music by pushing me to explore a new instrument and learn difficult pieces, with a consistent, gentle enthusiasm the whole time. He truly cares about all things percussion, and his love for the art is contagious.”  Jackson D - Ohio - Former Student

"I worked with Mr. Payne for many years on many different instruments such as drum set, marching snare, quads, as well as 4 mallet marimba. Any time I was taught whether that was in private lessons or at my high school there were nothing but positive experiences. He genuinely shows the art and the beauty of percussion through his professionalism and his dedication. A truly kind person and a fantastic teacher."
